Gex

Gex Gecko is the titular protagonist of the platforming video game series, Gex. He is voiced by actor and comedian, Dana Gould. He is an anthropomorphic gecko with a love for television and cracking witty one-liners. Gex was a popular character in the 90s and was Crystal Dynamic's first mascot.

Why He's Gexy[]

  1. Gex is a cool and confident character, with his personality being primarily based around popular figures such as James Bond, Austin Powers, and even Batman.
  2. He is a secret agent and spends the majority of his time keeping the world safe from those who would want to ruin television.
  3. Many of his quips are funny and quotable, making him a very witty and likeable protagonist.
  4. Gex is incredibly rich even before the events of the first game. He owns his own mansion, the world's largest TV set, and a decades worth of food. By Gex 3, he has a private island with a secret high-tech cave and a personal turtle butler named, Alfred.
  5. He is a ladies man, and can get practically any woman he wants.
  6. He loves his family deeply, as the death of his father sent him into a deep depression. He also saved his cousin, Cuz, after he was kidnapped by the mob. He even thawed out his ancestor, Rex, from an icy prison in Holiday Broadcasting.
  7. Gex has an impressive wardrobe of costumes, with several of them granting him abilities such as flight and super strength.
  8. Gex is a big music lover, and tends to quote lyrics to popular songs in a variety of levels.
  9. Gex loves popular culture and media, making him a very relatable character to many young people growing up today.
  10. He can break the fourth wall, and is probably one of the only video game characters with this ability. This, along with his tendency for making jokes and references, makes him the video game equivalent of Deadpool.

Bad Qualities[]

  1. Some consider Gex's constant in-game one-liners to be annoying (especially when the same phrases are repeated over and over).
    • As a result, he often gets compared to Bubsy the Bobcat as another "annoying" mascot character.
  2. Gex is a major horn dog, much to the chagrin of Agent Xtra who receives the blunt of his sexual innuendos in Gex 3.
  3. Due to being a product of his time, some of Gex's references, jokes, and mannerisms (as well as his games in general) can be seen as dated today.
  4. Despite Rez supposedly being his long-deceased father whom he loved so much, Gex has no qualms beating and potentially killing him. His lack of empathy could be due in part to his father turning to villainy, but it is still worth noting.
  5. Although he is generally a good-natured person, he is at times very lazy and greedy. When approached by the government about saving the world from Rez once again in Enter the Gecko, Gex initially refuses. It is not until they offer him a suitcase full of cash and a secret agent suit that he agrees to stop Rez.

Trivia[]

  • Many people joke about Gex being the Geico gecko. However, Gex actually pre-dates the gecko's appearance by several years.
