"I don’t understand the feelings of the weak. The law of the world is survival of the fittest. It’s how the weak are weeded out. It just means those people that died were too weak. It’s only natural for the weak to perish."

---Esdeath, expressing her social Darwinist views of the world.

General Esdeath (simply known as Esdeath, エスデス, pronounced "Esudesu") is the secondary antagonist of the manga, Akame Ga Kill!, and the 2014 anime adaptation of the same name. She is a high-ranking general of the Empire, one of the most powerful Teigu users in the world and the leader of the Jaegers.

Why She Rocks

  1. Esdeath is one of many times where the antagonist in a certain series surpasses and is even more memorable than the protagonist.
  2. She loves to fight and held special respect for strong opponents, which shows when she openly recognized Susanoo as a warrior rather than a simple Teigu.
  3. Her love of battle has occasionally inspired her to take actions that would incite more hatred against the empire, in the hopes of being able to put down more rebellions.
  4. She has even stated that should the empire fall, she would simply start a war herself to satisfy her need for bloodshed.
  5. Her voice actors: Satomi Akesaka (Japanese) and Christine Auten (English) do fantastic jobs voicing her and perfectly capture her aggressive, anti-heroic personality. \
  6. Despite all of this, she has shown a genuine and chrismatic side of her.
  7. She is known for treating her subordinates fair and well, letting them do as they please, which in turn inspires their intense loyalty and devotion; this makes her followers the strongest offensive force of the Empire. This side of her truly shines when expressing her love for Tatsumi, in which she offers a warm and comforting affection for him, even swearing to protect him from anyone that dare harms him and willing to clear up his name as a member of the Night Raid.
  8. Despite being an ax-crazy, sadistic, bloodthirsty social Darwinist, Esdeath can change rather drastically around Tatsumi, turning into someone more akin to a lovestruck schoolgirl, going so far as to keeping a booklet where she writes down advise on how to make Tatsumi love her as well as draw various childish sketches of Tatsumi and herself. The sudden changes are rather comedic and even make her look somewhat adorable at times.

Bad Qualities

  1. Esdeath was responsible for the deaths of millions of people in the north of the country and several other conflicts and war on account of the rebellion against the Empire.
  2. Ordered her men to plunder and rape a villas villagers to their hearts content in her earliest appearance.
  3. Esdeath embodies a number of horrific properties that makes her just as universally reviled as the people she sells her talents too.
  4. Esdese is a massive hypocrite whom sells her talents to people weaker than herself. Working as a mercenary for the debauched and corrupt weaklings of the empire while claiming to be a partner to people whom are useless on their own. Whom mainly hide behind their bastardized politics to accomplish anything worth a damn.
  5. Esdese never truly suffered any real Karma despite all of her quintuple life-sentence worthy atrocious actions.
  6. Comes off as a self-righteous and justified in explaining away that all her atrocious actions are the right of the strong. Given she's an over glorified war criminal whose atrocities match that of the Prime Minister's cabal.
  7. Esdeath's obsessive infatuation with Tatsumi; an individual whose decidedly younger than here. Makes her out to be an fascist stalker.
  8. The insane troll logic of her men working for her is not working for the empire despite sending them out to do the crooked nobilities dirty work is contradictory to her claims.
  9. Esdeath is an all around selfish jerk whom pretends to care about the people under her care as an official dignitary yet mocks them after hearing of their demise regardless.
  10. How the story shifted from the Main Character's perspective to focus on her growth and character development (or lack thereof).
  11. Her direct endangerment of subordinates near the stories climax being proof that she doesn't care about anyone but herself. Something which is highlighted by her final Trump Card at the end of the Manga.
  12. Her annoying ability to grow whole new powers and applications for a teigu that could not be given new powers or abilities to begin with.
  13. The paramount lack of empathy said corrupt General displays every time someone under her command dies or whenever she bleats about loving Tatsumi while seeking to control him instead.
  14. The way shortsighted fanboys tend to overplay her shallow likable traits. Her own subordinates especially.
  15. Esdeath perpetuates murder, crime, poverty and injustice in the Empire just to garner more hatred towards the Empire to further more conflicts for her demented hobbies.
  16. She is every bit as much a corruptor and all around reviled individual as the rest of the malfeasance court in Honest's cabal of slime molds.
  17. The more the author of the story tries to humanize her, the more readers see she is a universally reviled person.
  18. Esdese's entitlement to whatever she wants due to being overpowered in story.
  19. She buried countless citizens of the empire alive out of spite.
  20. All the sickening fanfics made which ramp up the squick factor of all her nasty, countermanding personality defects and obsession with Tatsumi while also giving him to her despite being unworthy of love; his or anyone else's.
  21. The way said fanfics treat Esdeath's vile atrocities and cruelty towards Tatsumi while passing it off as love.
  22. Despite all of her vomitrocious tendencies she is still universally loved in and out of story. Irregardless of how much of a huge A-Hole she is in name and by right.
  23. Her sickening and despicable obsession with torture, murder and violation.
  24. Esdeath's constant, chronic and repetitive saying about how she loves the main character but clearly disavows his feelings in place for her own rabid need to own his every iota of being. Failing that, she would kill him and not bat an eye to his passing afterward. Thus showing she was never really capable of caring for anything or anyone other than herself.

Trivia

  • Esdeath's name was originally translated into "Esdese", a play on the phrase "S, desu!", which means "I am an S(sadist)".
  • In the Akame Ga Kill! anime, Esdeath's bust size has been notably exaggerated.
    • Because of this her popularity skyrocketed in the public eye.
